Ernestine’s Women’s Shelter is a long-running community organization in Toronto that supports women, children, and gender-diverse individuals experiencing gender-based violence. Founded in 1983, it provides emergency shelter alongside a wide range of wraparound services, including crisis counselling, legal and housing advocacy, and specialized programs for children and youth. The organization operates with a trauma-informed, anti-oppressive approach, helping survivors not only find immediate safety but also rebuild their lives with long-term stability, independence, and dignity.

St. Margaret’s New Toronto in Etobicoke serves as both a place of worship and a community hub. The church emphasizes inclusivity and belonging, welcoming people from diverse backgrounds to gather. Stonegate Community Health Centre in Etobicoke provides team-based primary care along with services like mental health support, dental care, and community programs. Weston Area Emergency Support (WAES) is a volunteer-driven, community-based organization in Toronto’s Weston neighbourhood that provides essential food assistance to individuals and families in need. Founded in 1986 through a partnership of local churches, it operates as a food bank offering free groceries in a respectful, non-judgmental environment. Serving residents facing financial hardship, WAES plays a key role in local food security by helping meet immediate needs while supporting a diverse and vulnerable community.

Music Share for Seniors is a Toronto-based nonprofit organization that uses personalized music programs to reduce social isolation among older adults in long-term care. Founded in 2017, it pairs trained volunteers with seniors to create and share individualized playlists based on their life histories and musical preferences, helping to spark memories, conversation, and emotional connection. Through these one-on-one music experiences, the organization aims to enhance well-being, foster relationships, and bring moments of joy and belonging to seniors facing loneliness.

Seeds of Hope for Autism spoke to us about the huge need for autism supports. Seeds of Hope fills the gap for families unable to afford private autism services while waiting for government support. 100% raised goes to families.
Kindred Kitchen is a community drop-in soup kitchen run out of Roncesvalles United Church in Toronto. Held every Sunday starting at 1 pm, it offers free sit-down meals to anyone in need. It’s a warm, inclusive community service coordinated by Carolyn Bennett and operates in the church basement at 214 Wright Ave. No fees or eligibility criteria, just a place to share a meal. They welcome drop in volunteers to help serve and clean up!

The Rexdale Women’s Centre is a not-for-profit agency serving high-need women—including immigrants, refugees, and newcomers—in the Greater Toronto Area. It offers a wide range of culturally sensitive services: crisis intervention (including support for survivors of intimate partner violence and human trafficking), employment and settlement assistance, family and prenatal/postnatal programs, youth services, parenting support, community kitchens, language training, and more across multiple hubs.

Based in Etobicoke, Trust 15 is a grassroots charity founded in 2011 by Marcia Brown. It delivers weekly after-school drop-in and mentorship programs for around 120 youth, focusing on self-esteem, conflict resolution, and leadership development. Its initiatives include Ladies on the Rise, Boys of Excellence, Men of Distinction, and Girls on the Rise. Within five years, 93 % of participants from Ladies on the Rise and 95 % from Men of Distinction enrolled in post-secondary education.

Moorelands empowers children from low-income families across Toronto West through experiential learning programs. Founded on the belief that every child “has the right to succeed,” it offers camps and city-based programming that foster leadership, confidence, teamwork, and resilience. In 2023, 88 % of kids reported improved confidence, 91 % saw gains in teamwork, 92 % improved communication, and 92 % enhanced problem-solving skills. The organization works to level the playing field, ensuring children from underserved communities have access to the same enriching experiences as their peers.

Established in 2014, the WaterStone Foundation is a registered Canadian charity dedicated to ending eating disorders by raising awareness, improving access to treatment, and funding supportive programs. Their mission: to create “healthy lives, free from eating disorders. They launched a Student Support Program offering free, specialized eating disorder therapy on university and college campuses, initially partnering with Toronto Metropolitan University and George Brown College.

Stella’s Place is a mental health organization focused on providing youth and young adults (ages 16-29) with accessible, peer-supported services. New Leaf Foundation had often been lovingly described as “the little engine that could”. For more than 18 years, the organization produced highly respected and sought-out programming and resources with modest funding and a small but amazing staff team.
Due to increasing challenges around sustainability the organization had to close “doors”, effective March 2025.

The 482 Collective Toronto West is a grassroots organization focused on providing accessible community services to marginalized groups in Toronto’s west end. The Etobicoke Humane Society (EHS) is a volunteer-run, not-for-profit organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming animals in the Greater Toronto Area. EHS focuses on providing medical care, fostering, and adoption services for abandoned or neglected animals, with a special emphasis on cats and dogs. Dinner with Dignity Toronto West is a community-driven initiative that aims to provide a nutritious meal and a welcoming environment for individuals and families facing food insecurity. Operating primarily in the west end of Toronto, the organization believes in treating everyone with respect and dignity, offering more than just food, but also connection and support. Volunteers prepare and serve warm meals, creating a safe space for socialization and community building. Dinner with Dignity seeks to combat hunger and isolation, working to ensure that no one in the community goes without a meal.
Furniture Bank is a non-profit organization focused on providing gently used furniture to families and individuals in need. In collaboration with social service agencies, they help furnish homes for people transitioning out of homelessness, fleeing domestic violence, or starting over after financial hardship. By diverting furniture from landfills and redistributing it to those in need, Furniture Bank helps families create stable, welcoming homes, providing essential items like beds, couches, and kitchenware.
The Dorothy Ley Hospice, based in Etobicoke, is a leading provider of palliative care services, supporting individuals with life-limiting illnesses and their families. Established in 1988, it offers compassionate care in a peaceful, home-like environment, prioritizing comfort, dignity, and quality of life. Services include inpatient care, bereavement support, and home care, all tailored to the specific needs of patients and their loved ones. The hospice’s holistic approach addresses physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being, ensuring that people nearing the end of life receive the support they deserve.
Humber Valley United Church, located in Toronto’s west end, has been actively involved in helping displaced families, particularly refugees from Afghanistan, find new beginnings in Canada. The church’s Afghanistan Refugee Family Sponsorship Program is part of a broader commitment to community engagement and support for newcomers. Through this initiative, Humber Valley provides financial assistance, settlement support, and emotional guidance to Afghan families fleeing war and persecution. Volunteers and donors come together to help with housing, employment, education, and integration into Canadian society. Due to increasing challenges around sustainability in a changed post-pandemic philanthropic landscape, in November 2024, New Leaf’s Board of Directors and co-founders decided to formally close the organization’s “doors”, effective March 2025.
ONECHILD Toronto West is a non-profit organization committed to supporting children and families in Toronto’s west end, particularly those facing adversity. They focus on child and family wellness through programs that promote mental health, social connection, and educational support. ONECHILD provides a variety of services, including after-school programs, mentorship, and community engagement, helping to create safe spaces where children can thrive emotionally and academically. Carmelina’s House is a not-for-profit organization that provides safe, supportive housing for women and children who are fleeing domestic violence. Located in Toronto, the organization offers both immediate emergency shelter and long-term housing solutions, along with counseling and community-based services. Carmelina’s House aims to help women rebuild their lives by offering emotional support, legal advocacy, and essential services that promote healing and independence. Abbey’s Goal is a charitable organization, that through fundraising and generous donations, promotes the fundamental qualities that define Abbey. Abbey lived her life with bravery, compassion, laughter, kindness and love. She cared about making a difference in the lives of others globally, within her community, and in the lives of those she loved. Her spirit was contagious and filled the world with light. Parkdale Project Read is a community-based literacy organization that helps adults in Toronto’s Parkdale neighborhood improve their reading, writing, and digital literacy skills. The High Park Nature Centre is a community-based environmental organization that connects people of all ages to nature in Toronto’s High Park. The Jean Augustine Centre for Young Women’s Empowerment is a Toronto-based organization dedicated to empowering young women from marginalized communities. Named after the first Black woman elected to the Canadian Parliament, Jean Augustine, the center offers educational programs, mentorship, leadership training, and skills development. The Stop Community Food Centre is a Toronto-based organization that addresses hunger and food insecurity by providing access to nutritious food, along with opportunities for social inclusion, education, and community building.
